Caring for your family

Being a GP is a weird gig. You get to see the very best and the worst of humanity, you see courage that defies belief, resilience and characters that make you laugh out loud. For me, the whackier the better!

I’ve been a GP since 1993 and not always a garden variety one either. My patients at Sans Souci in Sydney’s south are mainly families. But I’ve walked the dark side in my time, and as a methadone prescriber (increasingly rare!!), I’ve fraternised with some of this country’s greatest characters.

But truth be told, I’m not sure how I even ended up studying medicine when I could not pass a science exam at school to save my life and got into a medical degree on the back of my English and humanities marks. Life’s like that. Eventually I just stopped fighting it and gave in to my inner writer!

I wrote my first book, ‘Why am I so Tired? (How to put the fuel back in your tank)’ with my great buddy and fellow GP, Anne Thomson and since then I never looked back.

Being a columnist for the incredible team at Practical Parenting, and the amazing gang at Women’s Health Magazine is an absolute blast. Working for Channel 7 on their Sunrise and Morning Show programmes is just as much fun as it looks. Yes, they really are all that nice!! Scary huh!!

In a blended family of 8 with kids ranging from 17 year old Sam who is driving to 4 year old Tara who is barely writing her name, and a mum who is hardly ever home and often outsources the most basic household ticket items, life in our house is busy. But always full of laughter!

My next book is almost done so watch this space. Meanwhile check out my blogs on the stuff from the REAL world of medicine that makes me laugh, shudder and shrug!!

Thanks for joining the circus!! XXX
